Orthopedic Surgeon in Burlingame and San Francisco

I was dealing with significant shoulder pain and was relieved to find that the orthopedic surgeon who had successfully operated on my hip years ago is now practicing in Burlingame. He came highly rated on Yelp, which I am not surprised by. When I called, his assistant, David, was incredibly helpful and managed to fit me in the very next day. Dr. Shin was thorough, kind, and extremely knowledgeable. He took the time to carefully evaluate my symptoms and review my X-rays before clearly and thoughtfully explaining his recommendations. I never felt rushed and truly appreciated his attentive approach. Thanks to his care, my shoulder is now back to normal. Dr. Shin is an excellent physician, and I would highly recommend him to anyone in need of orthopedic care.

Can't say I was thrilled. At first he seemed fine: attentive and friendly. But things changed when the procedure he did on me didn't work. I had a partial tear in my hamstring tendon, and he performed a PRP on it. But after a month of still having pain, he said it was clear that the PRP hadn't worked. That in itself wasn't the problem; it's what happened after. I wrote him a (very nice) letter explaining why I didn't feel he had paid enough attention to certain things (an MRI of my spine, for example), but I never heard a word from him. (Though he he did call me after this review was posted...two months later.) Also, it felt like it was pulling teeth to get the office to refer me to a spine doctor. It was like I was just cut loose. So...I'd say the treatment might have been appropriate, but the follow-up was sorely lacking.

I had a full right knee replacement in mid-November 2024. My experience with Dr. Shin and his Surgery Coordinator, Gloria Ortega, was excellent! I always like to say that knee surgery is not for sissies. Dr. Shin and Gloria made the experience highly-manageable! The knee surgery itself went perfectly and, cosmetically, my scar from it is very thin. Dr. Shin was kind and caring both pre- and post-op. Gloria is a superstar who solved a number of problems that arose involving things from the cancellation of my in-home PT plan the day after surgery (and solving the problem immediately) to answering the many questions I had over several months. She get backs to you in a very timely fashion, generally within several hours. I'm out walking and enjoying life again and I owe it to Dr. Shin and his team! Highly recommend!!

Let's face it--- who wants to see a surgeon? Especially the ones shoving surgery down your throat -- when a more conservative route might be better. This is my second gig with Dr. S and his staff -- 1st time was for a total shoulder replacement. Instead of doing it himself, he had the humility to refer me to someone else who had more experience w the type of issues i had w my shoulder. So now I"m back w 2 bad knees -- compliments of too many marathons and other body crushing sports. Dr S outline every possible option for me -- the super conservative route of injections/anti-inflammatories, a less invasive surgical option and a pretty grueling surgical option. Because he took the time to know my history and me, he understood that I've undergone 3 significant, invasive surgeries in 3 years, including a spinal fusion which resulted in years of complications and post op procedures that I'm still under going. After talking about all 3 options at length, he allowed me to choose w/ no pressure. After I chose, I asked him what he thought-- and it was what he would have proposed. We will be going the less invasive surgical route because I'm too full of cortisone from my spine and shoulder from previous years and already on a host of anti-inflammatories. After what my body has been through, the more invasive surgery would likely be far more taxing than normal. This is what garners one's trust in one's physician -- and he has mine 100%. Shout out to his staff - Michael, Aaron and Heather -- who not only run a tight ship. but are just as buttoned up about my case, my history and me. They feel like family. Once again, less than 5 mins wait time -- and that's after I was late!

I was referred to Dr Shin when our orthopedic surgeon was going to retire and sold his practice. I had a torn tendon that had snapped back repaired so I didn't have to have a more extensive surgery. I'm very happy with the care I received from everyone at the surgery center and his office staff in Burlingame has been great. I continued to have follow up appointments and PT until recently when Dr Shin was satisfied with my recovery. My surgery was May 2023. I plan on continuing to see Dr Shin for other issues I have and have referred other's to him.

I'm 2 for 2 w Dr Shin and his excellent staff. First saw him (5 stars) Feb 2023. Back again for something different. Shout out to Dean (X-rays) -- I was a problem due to spine issues and he made it so much easier. Shout out to David and Aaron --so attentive, on top of it, superb rapport w patients. Sorry to not have gotten names of office staff - who is responsible for timely communication, attention to detail, coordination w other docs. I had a small -- 15 minute wait. However, the past 3 years I've seen a lot of providers. I have found that the best Drs often have waits. Why? First, Drs like Shin spend the time needed w their patients. He doesn't have one hand on the door, or staring at the computer while quickly checking off the tasks. He doesn't speed you through your answers. He listens. He looks at you, he sees your body language, facial expressions -- and leads his questions accordingly. I'd rather have a wait w my Dr when I get this kind of attention -- then get it exactly on time, so I'm rushed out exactly on time for the next patient. Second, this is SF, where traffic is unpredictable. I'm sometimes late myself because of it.

My son fractured his wrist during basketball practice. He was in pain and very nervous. Everyone at Dr Shins office was so friendly and efficient in getting us an appointment, setting up his cast, following up on x rays and eventually removing the cast. Outstanding experience. Outstanding physician and staff. I've been to several orthopedic surgeons over the years, knees.. spine..hips.. compliments of too many marathons. More recently (2 years ago), i was diagnosed with frozen shoulder. I saw Dr. Kenneth Akizuki and then Dr. Sara Edwards -- the kind of docs that dismiss you if you are not a patient needing surgery. I almost had to beg Dr Edwards to order another MRI. Now? My frozen shoulder has morphed into a hot mess -- no cartilage, torn rotator cuff, torn bicep. My pain management doc (Dr. Hoyland Hong -- another rock star) sent me to Dr Shin saying he was top notch and would send a family member to him. Because i have so much trust in Dr Hong, I immediately went to see Dr. Shin -- who was able to fit me in pronto. He explained my shoulder in detail, really taking the time to ensure I clearly understood what happened to it, and the effects of cartilage being worn down. Unlike many orthopods, no attitude, ego or arrogance. As much as I wanted him to be my surgeon, he stated that I need a complete shoulder replacement. I even asked for a partial -- because I wanted him to be my surgeon that badly. Unlike many surgeons (who want to operate so badly they will take the case themselves, rather than referring a patient on to another doc who specializes in a particular surgery) he said that even though he does perform partial replacements, a partial wouldn't provide full relief and fix all the issues I have. Instead, he referred me on to Dr James Kelly and Dr Mark Schrumpf. He took the extra step to contact those docs about my case to ensure I could be seen promptly. Special shout out to his medical assistant, Aaron, who was extremely pleasant and on top of all the things that needed to be done to expedite my appointments with the above mentioned docs. I didn't get the name of the front desk help -- but all were extremely pleasant (despite a packed waiting room). If I ever have the need for any more orthopedic surgeries -- he is the first doc on my list.

Dr. Shin is a dedicated practitioner who was doing consultations even when many practices were not working for the holidays. Making an appointment and interacting with his staff was a seamless and pleasant experience. He is efficient, very communicative and explains the diagnosis and treatment with confidence.

I had a fractured cartilage in my right knee. After Dr. Shin’s minimally invasive surgery which took just over half an hour, I was able to walk the next day! I am very grateful to him for his professional experience, which enabled me to get the best treatment for my lameness!

In June of 2020, I fell off a bridge while mountain biking and broke my collarbone, badly. I was referred to Doctor Shin by a friend. When my husband and I met with him, he was personable, attentive and very knowledgable about my condition. He gave us the option to let me heal on my own, but he strongly recommended surgery since my break was so bad.I got the surgery 8 days after my break and it went really well. I had no post-op issues. The follow up with Doctor Shin and his staff was great. I also had an amazing physical therapist (Potrero Physical Therapy - suggested by Dr. Shin). At 45, I was determined to get back my full range of motion, and I did.When I had the surgery, Dr. Shin said that because I am petite, I may want to get the plate and screws removed after a year. The idea of another surgery didn't thrill me, but I trusted his opinion. I waited almost two years and just got them out in March of this year. My second surgery was a success as well. I am lucky to heal quickly and without issue.Overall, I had a five star experience with Dr. Shin and his staff. I would recommend him/them wholeheartedly.

Awesome doctor and surgeon. Dr. Shin treated me and was also my surgeon for a total hip replacement. He is conservative in his approach, he is upfront about all of the risks and benefits, and he has just been the ideal doctor to work with in this situation. His office is well-run and his staff are great.I was a marathoner and triathlete, so it was devastating for me to develop this condition. Dr. Shin saved my life. Not only am I getting back to the activities I love, like hiking, he also evened out my legs! My right leg was always naturally a little shorter than my left leg. Dr. Shin managed to even them out! On July 7th 2020 Dr. Edward Shin did my hip Surgery and he did an excellent job. Unfortunately, my recovery has been very slow because I injured my lower back at Costco and that affected me to do my physical therapy because I have too much pain on my joints.I've had several appointments with him and in all my visits he has listened carefully and provided thoughtful answers to all of my questions and concerns. Dr. Shin performed a Rotator Cuff repair surgery, an open biceps tenodesis, and PRP injection. From the pre-op explanations of the tissue damage, the expected operational procedures, the expected outcome, and the type and duration of the physical therapy, I had a clear understanding of what would transpire and how long it would take to recover. Dr. Shin and his staff are very professional. The communications on the pre and post-operational requirements are clear and precise. The postoperative checkups are used to follow up on care and recovery and in conjunction with the physical therapy, the report adds to the assurance that the treatment is progressing as scheduled. Dr Shin worked magic on my hips in 2020, I had both replaced, and it's been fundamentally life-changing. From the first consultation where options were laid out, through two full hip arthroplasty surgeries @ CPMC Mission Bernal (in the midst of the pandemic), each with 3 month recoveries (+ physical therapy), and post-op checkins, Dr Shin and his staff have been great, and no nasty surprises with health insurance coverage (at least not so far lol). I can only speak to my own experience, and it's been top grade.

His technical competence is unquestioned. What sets him apart is his understanding of what the patient feels and is thinking (the concern, the worry, the unknowns etc.) and he handles those issues with as much skill as his achievements in the operating room.

In the three years I've been seeing him, I can say Dr. Shin has provided top-notch​ medical care for me and my arthritic hip. He's simply a kind and skilled surgeon in a world where you don't often get both. He always shared lots of info with me about treatment options and was sensitive to my preferences as I slowly moved through life without cartilege. He's very knowledgeable and has an incredible bedside manner. He always took plenty of time to patiently answer my questions, even telling me they were good questions. As the pain progressed, he understood why I wanted a cortisone​ injection to better enjoy a trip to Italy. And the following year he let me know that he was recommending hip replacement surgery and why. I was ready to move beyond the pain! Then in my pre-op visit,​ he gave me a clear description of the procedure showing me models and sample parts. Plus, he detailed various aspects of my recovery​. It all went so well that I wanted to jump for joy when I saw him for my two-week, post-op appointment. My hip wasn't quite ready for that, but he appreciated that I gave him a big hug. 10 weeks after surgery I couldn't be happier that I found such a fantastic orthopedist. Bonus notes, I think the ice compression machine he recommended greatly speeded my recovery. Plus, the people on his team are good.

Review is for complete achilles rupture / surgery. Tore my achilles over Thanksgiving 2018 - saw Dr. Shin following Monday morning and he had me get an MRI in the afternoon; came back next morning and had my surgery scheduled for Thursday. Surgery went very well - process was smooth and recovery has been better than originally thought (very small scar and movement / walking has been as expected or better). Some follow up on my end to get information from his office, however I would 100% recommend and go back to Dr. Shin - I have never had an injury before and take my health very seriously; I was initially cautious of seeing Dr. Shin as was referred by Urgent Care (I would've done a lot of research and asked for referrals from others if had time to do so) - but either I was lucky or Urgent care gives excellent referrals.

I chose Dr Shin for FAI hip surgery (arthroscopic shaving of hip bone spurs and stitching up torn labrum, among other things). It's the surgery you get before you need hip replacement. Rehab took a little longer than I thought (about 6 months), but I'm very glad I had the procedure. I'm almost at 100% now, back to playing hockey four times a week and the hip just keeps feeling better. Dr. Shin is very caring and has a wonderful manner about him. I could not be happier with this outcome. I feel obliged to write this review as a result of how well things turned out, and especially because I went to see Dr. Shin, initially, after having read his many positive Yelp reviews. Dr Shin is a great surgeon. He's very careful and thorough with diagnosing my shoulder pain. I had a really bad SLAP tear with a big cyst in my left shoulder. I decided to move forward with the surgery with Dr Shin and he was able to successfully repair the tear and remove the cyst.After a few months of recovery he noticed that I was recovering a little slower so he gave me an option to get an injection to help with my recovery. It has been 7 months since my surgery, and my left shoulder has regained strength and full range of motion.Overall, Dr Shin is very professional and he provides great service. I would recommend Dr Shin to all of my friends and family.

My husband hurt his shoulder over year ago from working out. He saw Dr. Shin at the end of last year and Dr. Shin quickly identified the cause of my husband's shoulder pain. He gave my husband a few options on how to cope with the pain and only recommended surgery if the pain worsened. Since my husband kept his gym regimen, his shoulder pain never fully recovered. At the beginning of the year, he saw Dr. Shin again and wanted to go through the surgery in order to regain full mobility. Dr. Shin warned him that the recovery would be very difficult. My husband scheduled the surgery at a convenient time for him. After the surgery, Dr. Shin explained the results and photos to us. During the following post surgery recovery months, Dr. Shin would follow up to make sure my husband's shoulder was healing timely and properly. Dr. Shin has been very thorough and communicative throughout this whole process. It has been over 6 months since the surgery and my husband has regained full mobility. Thanks for taking such good care of my husband!

Dr. Shin has a great bed side manner, thoughtful, and seems knowledgeable on treatment. I do not think I had a frozen shoulder as the treatment will be handled in 6-8 weeks for full recovery (fingers crossed) however, but I am on the path.The lower rating is for the 2 physician assistants. One "senior" PA has now left and gone to become a doctor in AZ. I think the title is more attractive then his patient care ability which is a pure shame, as there are so many professions to make money and not have to deal with people. He was quite clear on his attitude with his need to followup on a referral, telling me on my first meeting that he bent over backwards for me to get it. We all have to do administrative tasks in our jobs, and if you think healthcare is not one of them you are sadly mistaken. I truly hope he is NOT successful in achieving his degree as we don't need another person in a broken healthcare system already that doesn't care about the customer = the patient. Plus, instead of training his replacement, he simply had him deal with me at the first time, and he was clearly not alert, forgot what I would say, didn't read any of the information, that I had to stop the meeting.Dr. Shin did take this seriously, likely after he realized the review I left per his mention as I wrote it under the wrong doctor. However, it still stands. Everyone no matter what your level in healthcare should care about the patient, from the staff to the PA to the doctor. If you don't, find a much less forgiving job that doesn't deal with people and chase your big $$ that way.

Dr. Shin was the best sports medicine doctor I've been to. I've played college Tennis and still coach quite often. I've had ankle problems and Dr. Shin was very helpful with my recovery process and he was very easy to comprehend.I'm back playing at a high level and coaching on-court six days a week! Overall a good experience. Went there for my wife's treatment of patella femoral syndrome. He diagnosed perfectly and suggested physiotherapist. It took like 4-5 months to completely recover.

Pump fake in the corner, the defender bit. Went around him and drove and undercut me as I laid a high arching finger roll in. That finger roll led to an ankle roll after landing on the defender's foot. I heard a snap, crackle, and pop. Visions of Gordon Hayward flooded my mind. Luckily, Dr. Shin jumped to my defense--like I jumped on my defender's ankle--taking great care of my ankle and my anxiety. He reassured me that my side hustle as a semi-pro pickup ball player was far from over.You da real MVP.

I cannot say enough about how great Dr Shin is. I hurt my knee playing soccer a couple months ago and was able to get in to see him right away. His office staff was super nice and his medical assistants were very professional and caring. Dr Shin explained my Injury and went over what needed to be done. He answered all my questions thoroughly and you can tell he really cares about his patients. I ended up needing surgery and the process was very smooth. I am 8 weeks out an ACL reconstruction and I feel great about how I am progressing. He has been there every step of the way. Highly recommend !

Nearly a decade of my progression in sports/weightlifting was cut short by joint pain and apprehension of long-term knee damage. Dr Shin explained the anatomy of the patella and meniscus in detail and helped get me back to lifting again. Highly recommended for athletes.

I have been a patient of Dr. Shin for the last 5+ years, and I can honestly say he is the best Ortho Doc I've worked with for all my injuries (and I've had plenty). I've seen 8 different doctors for my knee & ankle issues, and they were okay but not great by any means. I felt like more of a number than a patient with those doctors. With Dr. Shin, you get consistent care & service every time you see him. In this past year, I had 2 back to back hand injuries & Dr. Shin was able to see me immediately, clearly communicate/diagnose the issue, provide the proper steps to curing the issue, and he made sure to follow up on my status. In the first 5-10 minutes, you can tell he knows his stuff, but the part that really sticks out to me is that he makes sure you understand everything as well. Moreover, I've seen enough doctors to know who cares & who is just trying to rush you out of their office, and with Dr. Shin he definitely cares.All in all, I rarely write reviews but I had to write one up for Dr. Shin, because finding a solid/legit doctor that is reliable, relatable, and honest is not easy at all. Dr. Shin is the best hip surgeon I've met. I hurt my hip playing basketball, and he went over the different treatment options with me. He reviewed my x-rays and diagnosed my hip sprain. I felt much better after seeing him.

My daughter injured her hip about a month ago, but it stems from a car accident last year. Our pediatrician recommended a good, local hip specialist, whom we saw in San Mateo. Due to his bedside manner, we didn't feel comfortable with him and it didn't help that he freaked my daughter out (me, too). I also did some research beforehand and I found Dr. Edward Shin, who specializes in the hip, on Yelp. I checked out his impressive background online and, even though he is all the way in San Francisco, I felt that he was the best one to treat my daughter. I always want the best. Dr. Shin is one of the nicest, patient, orthopedist around. He is really awesome! Unfortunately, he confirmed that my dd needed hip surgery but he took the time to answer our endless questions. He didn't rush us and explained in the simplest terms along with showing us pictures. We scheduled her surgery within less than two weeks and had a pre-op consultation before the procedure. Dr. Shin went over everything with us and we received a folder with detailed information, prescriptions, pre-op and post-op info. We were ready.DD had surgery last week. Dr. Shin meet with my husband and me to go over any last minute questions before he operated on her. Afterwards, he came back to give us an update and waited around for my DD to get back to the post recovery room. I removed the huge, bulky dressing after 1.5 days. DD has two intact small incision sites and was able to go back to school today. Dr. Shin and his staff called to check up on her a few times. I don't think he sleeps much because he called us early Saturday morning (because he cares a lot for his patients) to make sure DD was doing well. He gave us his cell phone number and email address to contact him if we had any questions or concerns. We didn't want to bother him and besides he gave us all the information we needed. I emailed his assistant, Danoush, a few times and he always gets back to me quickly, even on the weekends. They also use an App for us to contact them with questions and receive messages almost on a daily basis for her care from the team.We appreciate Dr. Shin and his wonderful team - Ada, Sara, Adam, Sohyun, and especially Danoush. Dr. Shin is awesome! I saw Dr. Shin after tearing my ACL playing soccer, my visits were short and sweet and my recovery went as planned. Dr. Shin was very thorough in informing me of my options and was vested in my longterm recovery. His team of interns were sharp and organized - it didn't feel like my office visits were compromised so these kids could learn, ya know? The front office is very well organized as far as helping me with insurance questions, scheduling appointments, etc. A little background on me: I didn't have any special circumstances, I have a normal body type even a little on the heavy side (average/below average in athleticism) and I work full time, so I think my excellent recovery directly reflects what a great surgeon Dr. Shin is. If that doesn't convince you, here's the long story: Part I: Pre Surgery June-August 2015I tore my ACL June 2015, went through the insurance chain of command and was advised to see Dr. Shin. I already had x-rays by the time I saw Dr. Shin so he could see exactly what was going on with my knee when I got there. In my first appointment he thoroughly explained how and why ACL tears tend to happen and outlined a recovery plan. He also let me ask a million questions and gave me his email if I thought of more questions once I left, which I did. For the next few weeks I followed the at home physical therapy, icing and ibuprofen regimen in preparation for surgery. Everything went as planned, I hit the expected milestones on our timeline (swelling went down, strengthened quad muscles, got range of motion back) and we booked surgery.Part II: Surgery August 2015I had surgery in August 2015 (I could have done it sooner, but I delayed it a few weeks so I could go to an Elton John concert). Dr. Shin manages the process with an app, which was great because you could manage your progress daily. Day of surgery they had me fill out some paperwork - I was super nervous and I didn't really pay attention to the paperwork so I recommend that you have whoever is there with you help you read it (in my case my mom). I'm not sure how the surgery went because I was asleep, but afterwards I woke up as they were rolling me out and walked right out of the joint (on crutches of course). They asked if I wanted pain meds while I was at the office, but I just wanted to get home so I declined - you should say yes. By the time I got home the pain started kicking in, trust me you do not want to wait the 10 minutes it takes for the pain meds to kick in. Part III: Post Surgery/Recovery August 2015-August 2016I went for a walk on crutches 2 days after surgery, I only went a block and back, but it felt great to get outside. By lunchtime on day 3 I was already off the pain meds and managed the soreness with ibuprofen and icing, which I assume is a result of Dr. Shin being a great surgeon. I started physical therapy the next week. They ask so little of you in PT it seems like it doesn't make a difference but it does, so just do it. I had no pain 2 weeks post surgery and continued to ice daily. I have a small scar on my shin (less than 1 inch) barely visible unless I point it out. I met with Dr. Shin every couple of months for the next year and visits were short and sweet as my recovery was on track. By my 1 year mark the knee was looking great and I was free to pivot left and right as I pleased!

I can't say much for my body because I am a wuss when it come to pain. But I can say I don't think I could have found a better place to go for the quality of service and care I have received on my journey with a broken elbow. Thank you guys from the bottom of my heart and from the bottom of my broken elbow! I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Edward Shin and the staff of AO Sports Medicine at 450 Sutter!!

I would highly recommend Dr. Shin without hesitation. He did two total hip replacements on me three and a half months apart. Dr. Shin and his staff are courteous, friendly, responsive, thorough, efficient, professional, conscientious, and have a sense of humor. Dr. Shin always spends the time necessary to answer my many questions, not rushing the appointment. He speaks honestly about the surgery and recovery process, giving realistic information about expectations, timelines, and recommendations. He hears and integrates my feedback about my care, ensuring that we are a team. A word used by my sister to describe the surgeries he did on me is "meticulous." Additionally, his staff - and I have interacted with almost all of them (e.g., reception, medical assistants, surgery scheduler, insurance staff) -- are extremely responsive to emails and phone calls in a timely manner and find immediate answers to my questions that get communicated directly to me.

Dr. Shin really seems to really genuinely care about his patients. He is not only friendly and professional, but is extremely knowledgeable and experienced! He projects a sense of honestly and reliability that would make anyone feel like they are in the best of care. He would consider and offer you all your options and make sure you fully understand each and every one. He is brilliant! I am so, so grateful that I made the right choice by being under his care.

Kind, thorough, and skilled. He cleaned up the mess that the last Surgeon left and was readily available for follow-up questions.

Dr. Shin and his entire team are fabulous people. Probably the nicest and most efficient office I've been to. He's very knowledgeable and has an incredible bedside manner. He took plenty of time to patiently answer my questions, even telling me they were good questions. 🙂 And I still was in and out in 30 minutes.

Dr. Shin's personal attention to me, professionalism and care were excellent. Total hip replacement, anterior approach. My healing was amazing and I have nothing but the highest recommendations for him.

After my first visits that didn't help recovering from my lower back pain, I was contacted from Dr. Shin regarding my healing process. He was very thoughtful, offered to schedule another visit in order to review my MRI together and check my body posture and muscle structure. This time the visit lasted longer and I felt it was was thoroughly carried out.He was very professional, showed me other exercises I can do at home and gave me a new physical therapy prescription. My lumbar spine problem is not healed yet, but at least I'm positive that It will get better soon.

Dr. Shin is great person and doctor! Everyone is professional and friendly at this practice. He did an awesome job on my Achilles repair surgery. The incision was hardly noticeable; and my pain was minimal. I didn't even take any of my pain meds -- not even aspirin. Maybe that's just me -- but I'm sure it helped that Dr. Shin took the care that he did to put my Achilles back together delicately. In fact, the location for my anesthesia needle on the top of my hand became much more painful, swollen, and bruised. I had no trouble healing at all and it's only been 6 months now since the surgery... and I've spent the last 2 months practicing yoga and being active. (I also went to Potrero Physical Therapy -- which is really a stellar clinic.)

Dr. Shin is one of the best! He is thorough and very knowledgeable of his field. I went in for some running injuries, including runner's knee and posterior shin splints. I am a marathon runner and have put my body through a lot of impact and injuries in the past. Being in the medical field, I've seen what good patient care entails, and Dr. Shin encompasses all the good qualities in an excellent provider. His staff is professional and friendly and are all willing to help with any of your questions and needs, whether scheduling or insurance coverage. Dr. Shin seems to really care about not only the patient's concern but what the patient expects and what their goals are, and working with the patient to achieve those goals. He is patient and understands the frustrations I was going through as an athlete that wanted immediate treatment and a plan of action so that I could be back on my feet in no time--pain and injury free. Dr. Shin is passionate about what he does, and practices with care and prestige. I highly recommend anyone looking for an ortho or someone who specializes in sports medicine!

I have had my fair share of experience with orthopedic surgeons and I have to say Dr. Shin goes above and beyond. I've had several appointments with him now and in all my visits he has listened carefully and provided thoughtful answers to all of my questions/concerns. I especially appreciated his thorough explanations of the problem and how he talked me though all of my treatment options including non-surgical ones. He has continuously made me feel like a partner in my treatment, rather than a passive recipient of his care. My knee surgery was successful and far easier than I expected, with an incredibly short recovery time and very little pain.His staff is excellent as well, both professional and warm. They have been great about scheduling appointments and getting me in soon after I call. Top notch all around, definitely recommend!

Dr. Shin is excellent. I tore my PCL and LCL doing martial arts, and ended up needing surgery followed by a lot of physical therapy. Through the entire process, from diagnosis to deciding a course of action, the surgery itself, and physical therapy, Dr. Shin was knowledgeable, skilled, and reassuring.What makes him exceptional is the care and attention he showed through the whole process. I always felt like he was looking out for me. He helped with everything from wrangling my insurance, to getting my braces and crutches fitted, to accelerating my physical therapy when needed. I think one of my scariest moments was sitting in the prep room, waiting for my first major surgery ever. But when Dr. Shin walked in to talk to me, I felt like things would be okay. His results speak for themselves. I went from being unable to walk before the surgery, through a long road of recovery, to climbing a mountain and returning to martial arts. I couldn't ask for more and highly recommend him to everyone.

Dr. Shin and his staff were excellent...especially his surgery coordinator Sara. I tore my acl and meniscus playing soccer and a family friend referred me to dr. Shin. He saw me right away and Sara scheduled my surgery for the following week Everything from the office visit, to surgery and post surgery went great. Dr shin walked me through every step of the procedure and explained the recovery process in great detail. He checked on my recovery and offers helpful advice. He also used an online system that lets you ask questions and have check ins post surgery.I would definitely refer my friends and family to dr shin for surgery or consultation. He is one of the best.

I was referred to Dr. Edward Shin by Golden Gate Urgent Care, having fractured my wrist in a fall. I was seen very quickly too. Dr. Shin was great from the beginning, kind and very patient with all my questions, mostly to do with resisting surgery. He even made a phone call to a specialist hand surgeon on the best course of action. I did have a cast, then got a removable splint as I was traveling to the UK. He referred me for hand therapy but I had several follow-up appointments with Dr. Shin too and I am almost back 100%. I can do most of my yoga poses, though not a back bend push-up yet, but am determined to get there ! I can't say enough good things about Dr Shin's care and expertise, and that of his staff too. Lovely assistants, efficient reception staff. I would go to Dr. Shin first for all things orthopedic.

He is extremely knowledgeable and professional, but also very personable. I couldn't believe how young he looked, but turns out he's been in practice for years. Unlike other doctors I've had, he really took the time to listen to me and understand my problems/concerns with my knee. I played a lot of contact sports so the wear and tear of my knees sliding on the fields got to me. He spent the time and explained the results of my MRI so that I understood exactly where my pain was originating from. He then walked me through several different treatment options and explained which route he would recommend - which was surprisingly non-surgical. Together, we decided on starting with cortisone shot and PT. He referred me to an excellent physical therapist, following up with me regularly to make sure my pain and swelling improved. He even emailed me on a Saturday night regarding questions I had asked.Also, his office staff is very welcoming and has made this whole process much more convenient for me. I can honestly say that I haven't had such an easy experience with a doctor before. Most importantly my knee is feeling great without surgery! I would refer my mom here in a heartbeat.

My father was suffering from a hand injury and being the "macho" man he is, it took a lot of effort to get him to see a doctor. Dr. Shin had come highly recommended by a friend and we are so glad we consulted him! My dad's first language is Spanish and while I helped explain the situation, Dr. Shin was attentive, incredibly nice, and genuinely concerned about my father's well-being. I have never seen my dad so relieved! It made both of us happy that he was able to see a caring physician!

I recently went in for my 1-year follow up with Dr. Shin after having my ACL repaired due to a basketball injury. I had seen two other doctors before I found Dr. Shin, and he by far was much more thorough in explaining my injury and the pros and cons to all my treatment options. He even took the time to review my MRI results with me, making sure I understood what what going on.Long story short, surgery went really well! Throughout my recovery process Dr. Shin has kept in constant contact with me to make sure I was doing well and improving at physical therapy. He answered all my questions and would return my phone calls/emails promptly. He was also very motivational and genuinely seemed to care about my outcome. 1 year later, and I could not be happier with my results. My knee feels better than ever and I am back to playing basketball. I also like that he has many students working with him and learning from him. It's great to see Dr. Shin taking the time to help prepare students in becoming future doctors.

After years of back and forth with podiatrists and other m.d.'s , Dr. Shin zeroed in on the problem that not one other doctor had, including one who had insisted I had gout and should go on meds basically "forever". He is beyond kind and attentive, he listens to you and did not rush. It's a treat to not have to hate going to the doctor!!! HIGHLY recommend him and this fine practice.

World-class service and best experience I've had in a doctors office in years! Punctual, professional, friendly, and very knowledgeable. Being an athlete with previous injuries and living in several different cities, I've had to switch doctors multiple times but Dr. Shin is by far the best Orthopedic Surgeon I've come across to date. He listens and truly cares about your well-being by going the extra mile following up post-surgery. I highly recommend Dr. Shin and his team. I've already referred a friend over and she couldn't be happier with him handling her injury!
